Do you want to increase your blog or website traffic but you have zero idea where to start? Whether you want more customers on your online store or higher volume on your blog to make more money from ads, increasing website traffic is not an easy task that can be achieved in one day.
Increasing website traffic may not be successful on the first try, but it is not rocket science. In this article, I would like to share some useful tips that you can start trying right away without investing a lot of money.
First, find out how much traffic you get now
What gets measured gets managed. Before you start growing your website traffic, you must know how much traffic your website is currently getting in order to compare and improve in the future. There are a lot of helpful marketing tools that can find out how much traffic website you're getting, such as Alexa, Ahrefs, SEMRush…… etc, which can help you to know the overall traffic and your website ranking. However these powerful tools don't come for free and it could be a financial burden for you if you just started your business.
The best way to start monitoring your website traffic is using Google Analytics. It's a freemium Google-owned platform that helps you to measures your website activity and performance. It shows you how much organic traffic your website has, where your visitors come from, how many people is on your website at any moment, how long did they stayed on each page, and and so on. This will give you a better idea of how your visitors are interacting with your website. Once you've setup Google Analyitcs on your site, take a look at least a couple of times a week. Adjust your marketing strategy or website content with metrics, and you will be able to gauge how well your efforts are affecting your website's traffic growth.
Content is still king
The most important piece of a website's SEO is its content, and Google's algorithm thinks so too. Creating interesting, beneficial, original, and engaging content will organically attract more visitors to your website. You can write about relevant topics that your visitors might find useful. Without quality content on the website, you might be able to get some traffic short-term, but you probably won't get repeat visitors to your website. You should also update your website content frequently, to keep your website visitors attached. Consider starting a blog for your business, as it is a good way to publish new content regularly and share updates about your company or your views on relevant topics.
Optimize your website headlines with keywords
If you want your website content to show up more often in search engine results, you should start adding keywords in headlines. Think about what words the audience you want to attract will Google, then add them into the headlines on your website. While the emphasis Google places on keywords in headlines has gone up and down over the years, it's still a significant factor and natural writing styles tend to mirror this technique.
How do you go about finding the right keywords? Try Google Keyword Planner, which provides search volume data and trends. After setting your targeting (region, languages, date range and negative keywords), try a few keyword ideas that you think might attract your viewers to see how much volume these words actually get per month.
Sometimes you'll find that your phrasing needs to be tweaked and other times you may find that almost no one is Googling your keywords. This allows you to revise your plan instead of spending months of effort towards very little traffic potential.
Use appealing images
As a picture is worth a thousand words, adding eye-catching images can do wonders for your website traffic. Based on this research on Socialbakers, photos make up 93% of the most engaging post types on Facebook in comparison to all other status updates. Also, Tweets with images get 18% more clicks than their text counterparts. If you can combine a strong title and a striking image together, then you'll at least get visitors clicking through to your content.
Share content on social media
In the first quarter of 2017, Facebook had 1.94 billion monthly active users, Twitter had 328 million, and the number is still growing. A good social media marketing strategy can help you to create more relationships with potential website visitors and interact with them on another level. In fact, social media may be the best place to promote your site depending on your business and the awesome part is that it's free. So every time you update your website, don't forget to cross post this new content on your social media networks so that you can reach more people. If you can write effective Facebook posts or tweets, getting people to share your content will go a long way.
Improve your website's performance
Have you ever been on a website, but it loaded so slowly that you just ran out of patience and left? Have you tried to buy a product on an e-Commerce website with your smartphone, but the site was not responsive and you couldn't see the product images clearly? Have you tried to sign up for an event but the user interface was too confusing to complete the process? All of these are reasons you'll lose website visitors and even directly affect your search ranking based on Google's algorithm. Make sure your website loads fast and all the content is displayed properly on all devices.
Join relevant industry forums
Find and participate in a community forum related to your business. Add a link to your website on your bio and start building authority by commenting and answering people's questions. Look for unanswered and fairly new questions which are relevant to your industry and answer them. If you have some interesting topics that you want to discuss or share, posting your thoughts is another great way to engage. Sooner or later, people will start visiting your website to read your hopefully insightful opinions.
Write guest posts
What is guest posting? It's an author writing an original article on another blog or website and it comes with a credit to the author, usually a backlink to the author's own blog in the bio area. As it's a good way to introduce your business to a new audience, it helps you to build brand awareness, improve your website SEO, and driving new traffic to your website. If you can, try writing 2-3 extra articles to guest post per month.
The best place to do this is on site's that allow guest posting or reaching out to site owner's in your field. As we're a company that gets hit with tons of guest post requests every day, here are some basic "do's and don'ts" of guest post requests:
- Do not automate this process and expect responses. These are cheesy and transparent and most companies won't respond (we just don't have time to respond to all this spam). A very rough template is okay, but the email should still come off unique. "I loved your writing on X article" is not enough.
- Show them original content ideas or articles. If you're not adding value to their site, don't expect a backlink.
- Find site's that are relevant to your industry, but not direct competitors. It's not likely that direct competitors are going to hand out backlinks or show you in a good light.
You probably won't see any immediate results after you have done these changes, and that's perfectly normal. It usually takes at least 2-3 months to see if it's working, and occasionally even up to more than half year. If you've done your due diligence, stick with your marketing plan to give it a fighting chance. However, if you don't maintain your efforts and tweak your content to your traffic, you will begin to lose your audience. Increasing website traffic is a long-term marketing tactic. No matter what strategy you decide to go for, you need to allow for at least 6 months, otherwise your efforts are better spent somewhere else.
