WordPress is supposed to make managing content easier, but sometimes even the simplest things can feel difficult. To those who are new to the WordPress world, this article will teach you how to create your own WordPress navigation menu.
Follow the steps below to create a menu
Step 1: Go to Appearance -> Menus in your dashboard, and click Create a New Menu.
Give a name to your menu. This name won't show up on your website, just in your dashboard. Then click the blue button that says "Create Menu".
Step 2: Add menu items
On the left side, you'll see "Pages", "Links" and "Categories" (depending on your theme and the plugins you have, you may have some other more options).
- Pages: Here you will see your existing pages that you have already published. Check those you want to add and click "Add to Menu" button.
- Links: If you want to create a custom link in your navigation bar, put in the URL (don't forget the "http://" part) and the link text here, and click "Add to Menu".
- Categories: You can easily add categories to your navigation bar from here. Select the categories you want to add, and click "Add to Menu".
Remember, if you want to edit or delete a menu item, just click the arrow on the right of the item to reveal additional configuration options. You can always drag and drop your menu items to change their order or make them become parent items or sub-menu items.
Step 3: WordPress Menu Settings
Depending on your theme or the plugins you're using, there might be some other options. By default in WordPress, there are usually two options: "Auto add pages" and "Theme locations".
If you tick the box that says "Automatically add new top-level pages to this menu," every time you create a new page you won't have to add it here manually anymore. You can also set a menu as the main menu on "Theme locations".
If you don't want this menu anymore, just click the red text that says "Delete Menu". Be very careful using this as you will not be able to restore it after deletion.
Step 4: Save it!
Don't forget to save your menu after you make changes. Clink the blue "Save" button at the bottom right to save it.
On the top right side of the page, you'll see there is a "Screen Option" tab. You can use this tab to create additional advanced menu settings. With "Show on screen" you can reveal more menu item options on the menu settings. You may also want to check out the advanced menu capabilities on "Show advanced menu properties". For example, "Link Target" allows you to control whether your menu links open in a new tab or in the same tab.
Making a menu item unclickable
Create a custom menu item on "Links" and put "#" for the URL then add it to the menu. Remove the "http://#" part on the menu item editing options.
